RODRIGUEZ, Giuliana; ROMERO, Beatriz  e  SAMALVIDES, Frine. Antibiotic prescription patterns in hospitalized patients in an infectious diseases department in Lima, Peru. Rev Med Hered [online]. 2014, vol.25, n.3, pp.117-121. ISSN 1018-130X.

Objective: To determine prescription patterns and antibiotic use in hospitalized patients in an infectious disease department in Lima, Peru. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted including all admitted patients in January 2013. A standardized protocol implemented by the Ministry of Health was used to gather data on dosing regimens, route of administration and reasons for using antimicrobials including prophylaxis and treatment. Two infectious disease specialists review discrepant results using a textbook edited by the Pan American Health Organization 2011-2012. Results: A total of 51 patients were included, 90.2% of them received antimicrobials. Proper prescription of antimicrobials was detected in 99.2%; 72.7% of the prescriptions were based on clinical-laboratory results, while only 25% had microbiologic confirmation. Conclusions: Antimicrobials are properly used including selection of antimicrobials, dosing and dosing regimens, but most of the prescriptions are not based on microbiologic documentation.
