Abstract

Objective: To determine the prevalence of type 2diabetes mellitus (DM2) in the adult urban population of Coishco district in Ancash, Peru. Methods: A cross-sectional study that included 96 healthy volunteers stratified by age and gender was carried-out. A glucometer was used to measure the glucose levels. Elevated glucose was considered if values were 120 mg/dl or higher. A follow-up glucose level was performed 5 years after. Results: 14.6% (14) had elevated glucose levels; 8 were males and 6 were females. Glucose levels varied from 127.6 y314.4 mg/dl among males, and from 141 y 285.4 mg/dl among females. Conclusions: A relatively high prevalence of DM2 was found in the Coishco district of Ancash.
