Abstract

GOYCOCHEA-VALDIVIA, Walter Alfredo; HIDALGO-TUNQUE, Carlos Martín  and  HERNANDEZ-DIAZ, Herminio. Association between viral lower respiratory tract infection in the first two years of life and the development of recurrent wheezing in 3-8 year old children. Rev Med Hered [online]. 2016, vol.27, n.3, pp.139-145. ISSN 1018-130X.

Objectives: To determine the association between lower viral respiratory tract infection in the first two years of life and the development of reversible recurrent respiratory wheezing (RRRW) in children. Methods: Case-control (1:1) study involving 400 children (a= 5%; ß= 20%). Cases were children with RRRW who attended the emergency room and the outpatient clinic of Hospital Nacional Cayetano Heredia between may and august 2009, controls were 200 children matched by age, gender and service of attendance. The history of viral upper respiratory tract infection was obtained by interviewing parents and it was corroborated with chart review. Results: An odds ratio (OR) of 14.52 (95% CI: 6.47-32.59) was found for the association between the variables studied. Stratifying by history of family atopy, an OR of 13.14 (95% CI: 5.82-29.67) was found for the association between RRRW and lower viral respiratory tract infection using the Mantel-Haenszel test. Conclusions: The results of this study indicate that children with RRRW had 14.42 times more chances to have had a lower viral respiratory tract infection in the first two years of life than those without, and that this association is independent of the history of family atopy.
