Abstract

Objectives: To determine an association between joint hypermobility, lower limb asymmetry and postural control with postural abnormalities in adolescents. Methods: Cross-sectional study conducted at the National Rehabilitation Institute “Dra. Adriana Rebaza Flores” Amistad Perú-Japón, Chorrillos-Perú. All students of the 5th year of a private secondary school in Lima participated in the study. Joint hypermobility (JH) was assessed with the Beighton´score; lower limb asymmetry (LLA) was evaluated with X-ray; postural control (PC) was evaluated with static posturography using IST FOOTWORK platform; plantar surface (flat foot and cavus foot) was evaluated with baro-podometry;scoliosis and lumbar hyperlordosis were measured with X-ray measuring the COBB angle. Results: 247 adolescents were evaluated; 138 were males; median age was 15.2 years (range: 14-17). JH was observed in 24 (9.7%); LLA (>1cm) in 26 (10.5%); scoliosis in 17.8% (>10ºCOBB); lumbar hyperlordosis (>60º) in 42.1%; flat foot (II and III degree) in 19.8%; cavus foot (I and II degree) in 22.5%, and abnormalities in PC in 25.5% (central gravity area ?1cm2). A relationship between lumbar hyperlordosis and PC was found (p<0.04). Conclusions: lumbar hyperlordosis was the most common postural abnormality found. One out of four adolescents presented abnormalities in PC. Diminished lumbar lordosis correlates with PC.
