Resumen

TAPIA, Akemy; VILCAPOMA, Henry  y  NUNEZ, María. Acceptability and efficacy of oral midazolam in juice and gelatin in conscious sedation of preschool patients for their stomatologic attention. Rev. Estomatol. Herediana [online]. 2017, vol.27, n.4, pp.219-226. ISSN 1019-4355.  http://dx.doi.org/https://doi.org/10.20453/reh.v27i4.3213.

Objectives: To compare the acceptability and efficacy of oral midazolam (gelatin and juice) in conscious sedation of preschool patients for their stomatologic attention. Material and methods: Fifty healthy, non-co-workers, preschoolers and patients with stomatologic attention under conscious sedation were randomized to the preparation of oral midazolam (0.5mg/kg): juice or gelatin. Patient acceptability, behavior scores, vital signs, adverse effects and recovery time were recorded. The medication applied was blinded to the operator and the observer. Results: The acceptability of midazolam using gelatin was significantly higher (88%) than juice (56%) (p<0.05). The behavioral scores in each parameter (crying, drowsiness, movement and general behavior) do not differ significantly in both ways. Vital signs showed values within normal parameters for both groups (at each stage of sedation). No adverse reactions were identified in the study groups. The mean recovery for the midazolam sedated group in juice was 117 minutes and for the sedation group with midazolam in gelatin was 114.24 minutes. Conclusions: Oral midazolam in juice and gelatin is effective in stomatologic treatment under conscious sedation in non-cooperating preschool children. The use of midazolam administered in gelatin is highlighted by the greater acceptability of the patient.
