GUTIERREZ MESA, Manuela; LEON-MANCO, Roberto Antonio y RUIZ GARCIA, Vilma Elizabeth. Frequency of pathology in maxillary sinus analyzed with cone beam computed tomography. Rev. Estomatol. Herediana [online]. 2018, vol.28, n.3, pp.177-184. ISSN 1019-4355. http://dx.doi.org/https://doi.org/10.20453/reh.v28i3.3395.
Objectives: To determine the frequency of pathologies of maxillary sinus evaluated by cone beam computed tomography. Materials and Methods: The investigation was descriptive, retrospective and transversal. We reviewed 370 conical beam CT scans (Sirona Galileos Comfort) of patients who attend to the service of dental and maxillofacial radiology of the Clínica Dental Docente of the Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia, result, a total of 740 maxillary sinuses of patients older than 18 years. The following sinus pathology were taken into account: thickening of the mucosa, occupation of the maxillary sinus and non-permeability of the ostium. Results: It was found that 31,3% (n=116) of the tomographies belonged to the male sex and 68,6% (n=254) to the female sex. The average age of the patients was 47,4 years with a standard desviation of 14,07. In the 370 tomographies, 74,9% (n=277) of the cases presented sinus alterations. The most common alteration was thickening of the mucosa with 57,2% (n = 218), followed by non-permeability in 11,3% (n = 43) and occupation in 4,2%. (n = 16). Additionally, there was simultaneous non-permeability and thickening in 86 cases and no permeability and occupation in 18 cases. Conclusion: The frequency of pathologies and permeability of the ostium in maxillary sinuses evaluated by cone beam computed tomography was significantly high with 74,9% of the maxillary sinuses evaluated.
