The objective of this study was to identify the scientific production about the risk factors for the development of oral squamous cell carcinoma in a ten-year period. Virtual searches were performed in MEDLINE, LILACS, BBO, Scielo and Cochrane library databases. The risk factors associated with these malignant neoplasms were: smoking/smoking, alcohol, race, geographic location, educational level, dental status, hygiene level and sexual practices. Considering the survey carried out, it could be noted that oral malignant neoplasms predominantly affect males, but in recent years an increase in the occurrence of cases in women has been noted, as well as, the risk factors associated with this disease were predominantly alcohol and tobacco use.
