Abstract

SAN MARTIN SEPULVEDA, Nelly Michelle. Reading competence of Pedagogy students: The challenge for language educators. Educación [online]. 2023, vol.32, n.63, pp.222-236.  Epub Oct 02, 2023. ISSN 1019-9403.  http://dx.doi.org/10.18800/educacion.202302.r001.

This essay explores the issue of reading comprehension among school students in Chile, highlighting the lack of significant improvement in learning outcomes. It suggests that one possible reason for this is the structure of teacher training programs in universities across the country, which do not prioritize the development of reading skills in future teachers. Instead, these programs tend to focus on promoting rote memorization and cognitive performance. The essay concludes by stating that graduates of Pedagogy programs often strive to enhance their students’ reading abilities, even though they themselves have not fully achieved the desired level of competence.

Keywords : reading competence; initial teacher training; pedagogy student; language.
