Abstract

VALDERRAMA POME, Aldo Alim  and  SERRANO OLIVARES, Karol Julia Isabel. Population estimate of dogs and cats with owner in the city of Abancay, Peru (2017). Rev. investig. vet. Perú [online]. 2020, vol.31, n.3, e17294. ISSN 1609-9117.  http://dx.doi.org/10.15381/rivep.v31i3.17294.

The first study of canine and feline population estimation in the city of Abancay was carried out. The district, type of dwelling, keeping of dogs and cats in the home, sex, veterinary control, home confinement and sterilization were analysed. Dog ownership represented 47.8%, cat ownership 31.5%, and mixed ownership 21.1%. The highest concentration of cats and dogs occurred in the Abancay district as compared to the Tamburco district. Most families with a dog or cat live in houses and not in apartments. Most families have only one dog and/or one cat in their home, the male sex being predominant. Few dogs and cats have ever received veterinary attention. Confinement and sterilization practices were unusual. The Tamburco district presented a higher average number of cats and dogs per housing block. In the city ofAbancaythere are 9692 dogs and 6562 cats with owners. Likewise, there is a ratio of 8 people per dog and 12 people per cat.
