In order to identify, in the natural environment, the first growth stages of "Uña de Gato" (representative shrubs of medicinal importance from the Alexander Von Humboldt National Forest), seedling growth of Uncaria tomentosa (Willdenow ex Roemer & Schultes) DC. and U. guianensis, (Aublet) Gmelin is described. The seeds were germinated under semigreenhouse conditions. Useful characters for taxonomic identification are among others: type of germination, cotyledon, hypocotyl and epycotyl structure and organization, coupled with the description of the protophylls and metaphylls.
