Abstract

ARGOTE, Gregorio; AGUIRRE, Lucrecia  and  FLORES, Enrique. Frecuency of Trifolium amabile kunth (Fabaceae) at two ecological sites in the high lands of Puno, Peru. Ecol. apl. [online]. 2013, vol.12, n.2, pp.83-89. ISSN 1726-2216.

The frecuency of T. amabile, its degree of association with other species and the correlation with soil physical and chemical variables were studied at two Andean grassland sites dominated by tall grasses (Illpa located at 3820 msnm and Quimsachata at 4300 msnm) . Trifolium amabile was present in low percentages, less than 8.3 %, in the majority of vegetation communities and its presence was positively associated (p<0.05) with Alchemilla pinnata, Azorella diapensioides, Calamagrostis amoena, Festuca dolichophylla and Muhlenbergia fastigiata, where deep and well drained soils were present and where phosphorus and nitrogen content where adequate. This suggests that phosphorus and nitrogen could be acting as factors limiting its presence and distribution in the altiplano. It is recommended to conduct studies to clarify the role of this native legume on nitrogen fixation and its potential contribution to diet quality of grazing animals, given most native grasses are low in protein content.

Keywords : ecological site; frequency; vegetation association; grasslands; abiotic factors.
