Resumen

ADVINCULA ZEBALLOS, Orlando et al. Eco-efficiency plan and human water quality analysis in academic and administrative areas at la Molina National Agrarian University. Ecol. apl. [online]. 2014, vol.13, n.1, pp.43-55. ISSN 1726-2216.

A baseline was made in order to establish a plan for an Eco-efficiency use of human water in the academic and administrative areas at La Molina National Agrarian University (UNALM) from September 2011 to August 2012 according to the methodology established by MINAM (2009), as a consequence of the law 29289 which indicates that all governmental institutions must adopt ecoefficiency alternatives. In this sense, this study was focused, as similar institutions have already done, in developing a baseline that includes an inventory of equipment, an identification of inappropriate practices and an evaluation of water consumption in administrative and teaching areas. During the formulation stage of the eco-efficiency plan it was necessary to evaluate the baseline in order to propose actions that could minimize water consumption. It has been found out that UNALM facilities are old, with a high water consumption which clearly affects the efficiency of water management. The area that resulted as most critical was the students’ buildings, with 21% of equipment (toilets and urinals) in need of repair. Water consumption divided by average people on site resulted in daily average per capita water consumption. For the teachers it was 14.38 liters / person and for administrative staff (BAN) it was 9.89 liters / person, values that are well below the value set by MINAM during an evaluation for public institutions (82.1 liters/person). Physicalchemical and microbiological tests were made in water samples taken from student’s bathrooms, faculty and chancellor’s buildings and it was found out that the samples do not comply with the required parameters in the Law of Water for human consumption. Based on the diagnosis, this study proposed improvements that have been technically and economically evaluated, which would save 88’012 550.4 liters of water and a sum of 76 678.56 dollars.
