MEZA, Ysabel y JULCA OTINIANO, Alberto. Sustainability of cassava (Manihot esculenta Crantz) cropping systems in the Santa Teresa subbasin, Cusco. Ecol. apl. [online]. 2015, vol.14, n.1, pp.55-63. ISSN 1726-2216.
The present study was carried out in the Santa Teresa sub basin, province of The Convention in Cusco (Peru), in order to characterize the cropping systems with cassava and to evaluate the sustainability thereof. The study consisted in the contextualized construction of indicators for the sustainability, application of a structured survey and the confirmation in situ of qualitative data. The indicators were standardized in a scale of 1 to 5 and were weighted, according to the importance of indicators for the economic sustainability. On the same scale, the limit values for the stratification of the less sustainable and more sustainable systems were established. The characterization shows that, the cropping systems with cassava are diversified by the associated management with other crops, are productive by the potential of yield of the cultivars of cassava and, socially strengthened by the acceptable social conditions, as well as the participation of the family in the farm activities. For the sustainability, an average of 3.64 corresponding to a level of intermediate sustainability was obtained; and the critical points identified are related to agroforestry, diversity of cultivars and the area for cassava production.
