1.- A critical study is made of the functional-histochemical alterations in the adrenal cortex of strain C3H (Strong) mice under chemical carcinogenesis with 20-Methylcholanthrene. 2.- A new type of functional response of the gland is described under such experimental conditions, suggesting a state of "hyperactive-atrophy" in the cortex, contrasting with the functional-histochemical changes described in the literature for transplanted-tumor-bearing mice; alterations that fit rather closely the type response of Long et al. characterized by a state of "hyperactive-hypertrophy"of the gland. 3.- The experimental results suggest the participation of the endocrine system via the adrenal cortex in the mechanism of chemical carcinogenesis in the mouse of the C3H (Strong) strain.
