Resumen

HERRER, Arístides. Nota preliminar sobre Leishmaniosis natural en perros. Rev. perú. med. exp. salud publica [online]. 1948, vol.7, n.1-4, pp.62-69. ISSN 1726-4634.

A systematic study of peruvian cutaneous leishmaniosis has been made in a province of Peru for ever two years, where such disease prevails with an endemic trend, in a effort to find the possible natural reservoir. With this purpose in mind, the investigation was made chiefly on domestic animals. 469 animals were examined between May, 1945 and July, 1946, including dogs, cats, donkey, horses and hogs. It was felt that the probable macroscopic lesion in these animals, if any, would present the same ulcerative character as in man; these investigations met with negative results. Gaining knowledge of the macroscopic aspect of the lesions through experimental infections carried out on dogs in the laboratory, the search for spontaneous animal infections was extended to 496 other domestic: animals in the field: 40 dogs were found spontaneously infected. The most striking feature in these natural infections is that often no visible macroscopic alterations of the skin are present. It was found that the incidence of spontaneous infection in the dog has a certain parallelism with that of man in such Uta zone. Moreover, in many cases, the naturally infected animals lived in the same room where one or more human cases of cutaneous leishmaniosis dwelt.
