Abstract

HERRER, Arístides. Trypanosomiasis americana en el Perú: I. El insector vector y los animales que actúan de reservorio de la enfermedad de Chagas en la región sudoccidental. Rev. perú. med. exp. salud publica [online]. 1955, vol.9, n.1-2, pp.23-37. ISSN 1726-4634.

As a result of studies carried out during the months of January and March of 1952 concerning various aspects of Chagas'Disease in the southwestern area of Peru, the following data are reported: 1. Triatoma infestans is the only vector of Chagas'Disease in the area studied. Its present distribution is along the western slope of the Andes from the 14th to the 18th parallel of south latitude, and from sea level to approximately 3.500 meters of altitude. 2. In the majority of areas T. infestans is found to be infected with Trypanosoma cruzi. The incidence of infection varies according to the domestic animals on which the insect feeds. The locations where guinea pigs are raised or corraled invariably present the highest incidence of infection. 3. Three hundred and fifty-six domestic animals were examined, through blood studies, in search of natural infections. The animals included 297 guinea pigs, 32 dogs, 14 rabbits, 8 cats and 5 pigs. Among these, 17 guinea pigs and one cat were found infected. 4. In the valley of Moquegua one case of association between T. infestans and gray rats was found, in the vicinity of a house that did not appear to be infested with the insect. Both the triatomas and the rats collected were found infected with T. cruzi. 5. In conclusion are presented some considerations of the part played by certain domestic animals as a reservoir of Chagas'Disease in the southwestern area of Peru.
