HERRER, Arístides. Trypanosomiasis americana en el Perú: III. Importancia del cobayo como reservorio de la enfermedad de Chagas en la región sudoccidental. Rev. perú. med. exp. salud publica [online]. 1955, vol.9, n.1-2, pp.45-55. ISSN 1726-4634.
1. In Peru, in the whole length of the area infested by Triatoma infestans, the inhabitants often raise guinea pigs in homes occupied by humans or in corrals adjoining the homes. 2. Because of the close relationship existing between the guinea pig and T. infestans, the former becomes important in Chagas'Disease as: a) one of the principal hosts of the insect, and b) the most important reservoir of Trypanosoma cruzi. 3. Because of the transportation of the guinea pig from one location to the other, it is also assumed that this rodent is an active means of dissemination of the etiologic agent of Chagas'Disease.
