Abstract
HERRER, Arístides and MORALES, José. Trypanosomiasis americana en el Perú: VI. Verificación de la enfermedad de Chagas en la cuenca del Marañón. Rev. perú. med. exp. salud publica [online]. 1955, vol.9, n.1-2, pp.83-91. ISSN 1726-4634.
There are reported observations made in the valley of the Marañon River where previously triatomas infected with Trypanosoma cruzi were obtained, in attempts to determine whether Chagas'Disease occurs in the areas of Yamón, Lonya Grande, Roblepampa and Nueva York. These observations included a total of 338 xenodiagnostic tests, and 292 thick blood smears made from the same persons on whom the xenodiagnostic tests were made. The principal results obtained were as follows: 1. The presence of Chagas'Disease in the basin of the Marañon River was verified by positive xenodiagnostic reactions in every are a where studies were made. 2. Of 338 xenodiagnostic tests carried out in persons of various ages, 22 posirive rcsults were obtained; of 292 blood smears from the same persons, T. cruzi was found in three. 3. The strains of T. cruzi obtained by means of xenodiagnostic tests are of low virulence and short period of parasitemia in white rats. These characteristics, as weIl as the ability to infect only young rats, are identicaI to those observed with the strains obtained from Panstrongylus herreri naturaIly infected in the same areas of the basin of the Marañon.
