There are reported the results of a series of inoculations in white rats with two Peruvian strains of Trypanosoma cruzi which come from different geographic areas and are transmitted in nature by different species of triatomas. One strain has as its natural vector Triatoma infestans and comes from the southwestern area of Peru; the other, transmitted in nature by Panstrongylus herreri, comes from the basin of the Marañon River. The principal results obtained from these inoculations are as follows: 1. There are differences between the two strains of T. cruzi in respect to virulence, duration of parasitemia, and ability to infect white rats. 2. The strains which come from the southwestern area do not have any differences from the characteristics listed that would make them different from ordinary strains of T. cruzi. 3. The strains from the Marañon basin and the province of Moyobamba, on the other hand, infect only very young white rats, are of low virulence, and the period of parasitemia which occurs is rather short.
