BISSO, Adolfo. Exploración funcional de la Tiroides: Determinación del yodo proteico en la sangre. Rev. perú. med. exp. salud publica [online]. 1956, vol.10, n.1, pp.17-31. ISSN 1726-4634.
This study was carried out on a total of 129 subjects grouped as follows: 39 controls, 19 simple goiter; 12 hypothyroid; 26 hyperthyroid; 18 obese; 3 pregnant women and several patients with miscellaneous endocrine diseases. A protein-bound iodine determination (PBI) was done on every patient and BMR and blood cholesterol studies on many of them. Somnolent metabolic rate (SMR) was occasionally determined. Table 1 shows the comparative results of the first three procedures. The findings are discussed and the following conclusions are drawn: 1.- Subjects without evidence of endocrine disease have PBI values between 4.20 and 7 10 mcgrs. per cent, mean 5.4±:0.15, S. D.: 0.89±LO.10. Simple goiter and obese patients have similar PBI levels respectively. 2.-PBI levels follow closely the clinical diagnosis of thyroid functional status. Exception is made in cases of exogenous administration of iodine. 3. BMR figures are within normal limits in the control and simple goiter groups, high in the hyperthyroid group and low in the hypothyroid and obese groups. Individually, however, the BMR gives misleading results regarding thyroid status. 4. Blood cholesterol had no correlation with the thyroid status.
