HERRER, Arístides. Efecto de la Esplenectomia en la infección a Babesias de la ardilla Citellus Tridecemlineatus. Rev. perú. med. exp. salud publica [online]. 1956, vol.10, n.1, pp.32-41. ISSN 1726-4634.
Observations on Citellus tridecemlineatus with latent Babesia infections have demonstrated that splenectomy is followed by a sharp intensification of the parasitism, with marked anemia and other changes that can lead to death of the animal. The level of less than one cell parasitized per thousand that is usually observed in latent infec, tions, is increased after splenectomy to such a point that in some cases more than 80 per cent of the cells are parasitízed. There is likewise a marked increase in the intensity of the parasitism of the red cells, with up to 8, 10, or even 12 parasites within a single cell following splenectomy. The resuits of these studies indicate the great importance of the spleen in defense against latent infection by this type of Babesia, comparable to its role in Bartonella infections of certain animals.
