Abstract
HERRER, Arístides. Observaciones sobre la enfermedad de chagas en la provincia de Moyobamba: (Depto. de San Martín). Rev. perú. med. exp. salud publica [online]. 1956, vol.10, n.1, pp.59-73. ISSN 1726-4634.
Studies of Chagas disease have been carried out in the towns of Moyobamba, Calzada and Yantaló in the province of Moyobamba, department of San Martín, Perú. These investigations have brought to light some epidemiological aspects of this disease in the jungle areas involved, among which may be cited the following: 1 . In searching for triatomas in the areas involved, only Panstrongylus herreri was found. This insect is markedly domestic in its habits and has man as its principal host. Owing to the animal raising customs in jungle areas, P. herreri has not frequently established relations with domestic animals. 2. Neither the infestation rate nor the number of insects found in infested houses was high. 3. The infection of P. herreri with Trypanosoma cruzi . varied between 18.9 and 37.3 per cent. The infection rate in the three observed localities, with a total of 296 insects, was 31.4 per cent. 4. Of 204 xenodiagnostic tests carried out on the residents of Yantaló, 10 were positive. The majority of the positive tests were in children. 5. In Yantaló 208 xenodiagnostic tests were also carried out on domestic animals, of which only 198 were completed. In this series, there was only one positive test, in a dog. Taking into consideration the results of these tests and the census of domestic animals previously carried out, it is considered that these animals do not play an important part as reservoir of Chagas disease in areas such as those studied.
