Abstract
HIDALGO, Raúl. Trypanosomiasis Americana en el Perú: Observaciones entomológicas en el departamento de Tumbes. Rev. perú. med. exp. salud publica [online]. 1957, vol.11, n.1-2, pp.71-85. ISSN 1726-4634.
An entomogical survey was conducted in the northern, part of Peru (basin of Zarumilla and Tumbes rivers) on potential vectors of Chagas'disease. The areas studied were located geographically between 60 and 190 meters (200 to 625 feet) above sea level. The intestinal contents and feces of the captured triatomids were examined for infestation with Trypanosoma cruzi. The following conclusions were made 1. Entomological observations: a) In the basin of the Tumbes river, 65 percent of localities were infested with triatomids, while in the basin of the Zarumilla river only 15 percent infestation was observed. b) Of a total of 565 triatomids captured in the study, 557 belonged to the species Triatoma dimidiata, and 8 to the species Panstrongylus chinai T. dimidiata was collected from the basins of both rivers, while P. chinai was found only in the Tumbes river area. c) According to these observations, T. dimidiata appears markedly domestic in its habits, and uses man as his principal host. P. chinai also gave indications of adaptation to human dwellings. 2. Microscopic observations: a) There was no evidence of Trypanosoma cruzi in the intestines or feces of any of the 352 T. dimidiata and 7 P. chinai triatomids examined. b) In 26 specimens of T. dimidiata collected in the Cabeza de Lagarto and Cerro Blanco areas of the Tumbes ríver basin, a species of gregarine was seen in the Malpighian tubes.
