Abstract

SANABRIA ROJAS, Hernan. Prevalencia de Hanseniasis en contactos familiares de pacientes antes tratados: Estudio en el Ex Hospital de Guía de Lima, Perú. Rev. perú. med. exp. salud publica [online]. 1997, vol.14, n.1, pp.22-24. ISSN 1726-4634.

This study was conducted in order to determine the prevalence of Hansen's disease among relatives in contac with previously treated patients, given the lack of information regarding the magnitude of Hansen's disease transmission to family members. This study was carried out between October 1995 and January 1996 at the former Hospital de Guía in Lima, a Peruvian National Leprosy Sanatorium. A total of forty individuals (90% of family members approximately) among adults and children who had been clinically diagnosed with Hansen's disease were evaluated by means of bacteriological and histopathological studies. Laboratory studies failed to provide confirmation of any case, therefore prevalence of Hansen's disease among family contacts of previously trated patients was 0% . This finding had been suspected by researchers. During active case finding, it was observed that some index cases had been treated with dapsone alone and had later been discharged. The continuationof active case finding is strongly encourage, mainly among family contacts of patientes treated with the current multidrug courage.
