BELTRAN DE ESTRADA, María  y  UYEMA T, Norma. Amebas de vida libre en muestras de agua de piscinas del Departamento de Lima. Rev. perú. med. exp. salud publica [online]. 1997, vol.14, n.1, pp.29-33. ISSN 1726-4634.

Free-living Amoebae (FLA) are abundant and they are found in nature as well as water, soil and vegetation. Genera Naegleria, Acanthamoeba; Hartmannella ard Vahlkampfia are highly important to public health because they are opportunistic parasites that affect the human beings and cause the swimmers's disease. A total of sixty eigth water samples from 34 swimming pools, 3 rivers, 7 swamps or lagoons were studied with the following results: 40,9% of the samples had free living amoebae and they were Naegleria, Acanthamoeba, Hartmannella and Vahlkampfia. The pathogenicity of FLA was performed in laboratory animals trough brain, nasal and ocular innoculation. The use of efficient chemicals that do not involve any risk to human health is recommended for the periodical maintenance, and treatment of swimming pools based on these results.
