CHANG, Jaime; ZAVALETA, Alfonso  e  PHILLIPS, Irwin. Seroepidemiologia de Hepatitis B en cuatro comunidades de la Selva Central del Perú. Rev. perú. med. exp. salud publica [online]. 1997, vol.14, n.1, pp.34-39. ISSN 1726-4634.

The prevalence of hepatitis B virus (HBV) was investigated among healthy individuals in 4 localities of the high central jungle region of Peru. Serum samples were tested by ELISA for hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg), HBsAg antibody (anti-HBs) and antibody top hepatitis Delta antigen (anti-HD). The prevalence of infection markers was different for each study site, ranging from 6,8% to 53% for anti-HBs and from 1,2% to 4,4% for HBsAg. Probable risk factors were identified in each population, but no factor was found to be common to all the study sites. Close contact with infected people seems to play an important role in the spread of the disease, while no evidence of the importance of parenteral transmission was found.
