Abstract

MORALES DE SANTA GADEA, Sara; DIAZ V, Carmen; GONZALES Q, Dana  and  HUAPAYA C, Blanca. Susceptibilidad antimicrobiana del Streptococcus pneumoniae determinando la concentración inhibitoria mínima, 1999. Rev. perú. med. exp. salud publica [online]. 2001, vol.18, n.1-2, pp.35-37. ISSN 1726-4634.

Objective: To determine minimum inhibitory concentration of S. pneumoniae against the antibiotics recommended by PAHO/WHO in the treatment of acute respiratory infections. Materials and Methods: Descriptive study of S. pneumoniae cultures isolated from children under 5 years of age diagnosed with neumonia and meningitis in 7 hospitals of the country. The microdilution method for penicillin, chloramphenicol and cotrimoxazol was performed following the guidelines given by the National Committe for Clinical Laboratory Standards (NCCLS). Results: Of 30 isolates, 8 (26.7%) showed diminished susceptibility to penicillin, 4 (13.33%) showed intermediate resistance and 4 (13.3%) high resistance. Twenty one (70.0%) isolates showed resistance to the combination of trimethoprim and sulfamethoxazole and 10 (33.0%) showed resistance to chloramphenicol. Resistance to two antimicrobial agents was observed in 12 (40.0%) and multiple resistance was found in 2 (6.7%). Conclusions: This study shows the presence of strains of S. pneumoniae resistant to penicillin and other antimicrobial agents, which shows us the need to maintain an epidemiological surveillance on this bacteria.
