MALDONADO C, Fernando; LLANOS-ZAVALAGA, Fernando  e  MAYCA P, Julio. Uso y Prescripción de Medicamentos Antimicrobianos en el Hospital de Apoyo de la Merced - Perú. Rev. perú. med. exp. salud publica [online]. 2002, vol.19, n.4, pp.181-185. ISSN 1726-4634.

Objectives: To assess antibiotic use and prescription characteristics during the first 24 hours in patients hospitalized at the Hospital de Apoyo La Merced. (Junín, Perú). Materials and methods: This descriptive cross-sectional study included patients hospitalized during December 2001.Two ID physicians assessed independently the quality of the prescription; resulting data was compared to the United States Pharmacopeal Drugs Information (USP-DI) standards. Absolute and relative frequencies of the study variables were determined. Results: 105 patientes and their clinical records were included in the research, 70,0% were impatients at surgical facilities. The rate of Antibiotic Prescription in hospitalized patients was 80,9%. The most frequently drug used for therapeutical purposes was gentamicyn, where as cephalosporins were the first prophylactic option. The selection of the drug, alone or in combination, was correct in 50,6% of the prescriptions. Prophylactic prescription of antibiotics was more frequent in surgical services. Conclusions: We consider that the Proportion of Antibiotic Prescriptions in the Hospital de Apoyo La Merced, is high and it surpasses the nationally and internationally reported rates, although the different methodologies used limit its comparison. On the other hand, the proportion of inadequate antibiotic prescriptions falls within the levels expected for developing countries.
