PERALES D, María; CAMINA, Máximo y QUINONES, Carmen. Infección por Campylobacter y Shigella como causa de Diarrea Aguda Infecciosa en niños menores de dos años en el Distrito de la Victoria, Lima-Perú . Rev. perú. med. exp. salud publica [online]. 2002, vol.19, n.4, pp.186-192. ISSN 1726-4634.
Objective: To determine the frequency of Campylobacter and Shigella as ethiological agents of acute watery diarrhea in young children brought to four Health Care Centers in La Victoria district. Material and methods: A cross sectional analytical study was performed, taking stool cultures in children younger than 2 years old presenting to the clinic with acute watery diarrhea between April and October 2001. Children with dysentery and who had already received previous antibiotic treatment were excluded. Results: 248 cases were assessed, 48 (19,4%) stool cultures were positive: 33 (13,3%) were positive for Campylobacter, 12 (4,8%) for Shigella and 3 (1,2%) for Salmonella. No other pathogens were identified. Shigella species identified were: Shigella flexneri in 9 (75,0%) cases and Shigella sonnei in 3 (25,0%) cases. The only species of Campylobacter identified was Campylobacter jejuni, Biotype I, which was the most frequent (84,6%). Conclusions: Campylobacter and Shigella play an important role as ethiological agents of acute watery diarrhea in children under two years of age.
