Abstract

PORTILLA C, José. Susceptibilidad antimicrobiana in vitro de cepas de Neisseria gonorrhoeae procesadas en el instituto nacional de salud, Lima, Perú. 1998-1999. Rev. perú. med. exp. salud publica [online]. 2003, vol.20, n.4, pp.216-219. ISSN 1726-4634.

Objective: To determine the frequency of in vitro susceptibility and resistance of Neisseria gonorrhoeae strains isolated in the Sexually-Transmitted Bacteria Laboratory in our institution and tested against currently used antimicrobials, as well as the frequency of b-lactamase producing N. gonorrhoeae strains. Material and methods: Observational and descriptive study. 130 N. gonorrhoeae isolates (49 in 1998, 81 in 1999) were received for bacteriological confirmation in the Sexually-Transmitted Bacteria Laboratory in our institution from different parts of the country. The method used was the Minimum Inhibitory Concentration and the antimicrobials used were: penicillin, spectinomycin, ceftriaxone, cefotaxime, ciprofloxacin, and azithromycin. Results: The frequency of in vitro penicillin-resistant N. gonorrhoeae strains was 15/49 strains in 1998 and 15/51 strains in 1999. Resistance to tetracyclin was found in 31/49 strains in 1998 and in 51/81 strains in 1999. All strains (100%) assessed were susceptible to spectinomycin, ceftriaxone, cefotaxime, and ciprofloxacin. In 1999, 9/81 N. gonorrhoeae isolates with reduced susceptibility to azithromycin were detected for the first time in 1999. Between 1998 and 1999, 21/52 and 6/85 beta-lactamase producing N. gonorrhoeae strains were reported. Conclusions: In vitro resistance in N. gonorrhoeae strains was found for penicillin and tetracyclin. Antibacterial agents to be used for treating N. gonorrhoeae infections should be spectinomycin, ceftriaxone, cefotaxime, and ciprofloxacin. It is the first time that N. gonorrhoeae strains with reduced susceptibility to azithromycin are reported.
