Abstract

HERRER, Arístides. Subsistencia ocasional del patrón epidemiológico clásico de la uta (Leishmaniasis tegumentaria). Rev Peru Med Exp Salud Publica [online]. 2004, vol.20, n.1, pp.51-55. ISSN 1726-4634.

The endemic prevalence of "uta" showing the classical epidemiological pattern for this form of cutaneous leishmaniasis has been observed in a small indigenous community of the Peruvian Andes. Additionally to the benign nature of the infection, a high prevalence of the disease was found in children, both males and females, similarly to what was reported before the introduction of modern contact insecticides. This seems to be a special condition, mainly because of the isolation of this community, its altitude above sea level, and the rural environment that remans unchanged. The presence of Lutzomyia verrucarum and L. peruensis is also reported, as well as the results of the search for natural Leishmania infection amongst dogs and other wild mammals.

Keywords : Leishmaniasis; Cutaneous; Psychodidae; Insect Vectors; Peru.
