Abstract

MIRANDA C, Marianella et al. Consumo de sal fortificada con yodo en niños de 12 a 35 meses de edad y mujeres en edad fértil en el Perú. Rev. perú. med. exp. salud publica [online]. 2004, vol.21, n.2, pp.82-86. ISSN 1726-4634.

Objective: To determine the frequency of use of iodide-fortified salt in 12 to 35 month old children and in women of childbearing age. Material and Methods: Data was obtained from the Food Consumption National Survey for childbearing women and 12 to 35 month old children performed in 2003. The sample included 2097 children and 2909 women. The determination of the presence of iodine in salt was performed using a qualitative method approved to be used in Peru. Results: Percentages of children and women using adequately iodized salt were 92.9% and 92.8%, respectively. Lower prevalence figures were found in the jungle, particularly in Loreto department. Conclusions: High percentages of children and women of childbearing age using adequately iodized salt were found, as a result of the national strategy developed for controlling iodine-deficiency disorders in our country.
