Abstract
JUSCAMAITA P, Zoraida; TORREALVA C, María; CAIRAMPOMA M, Rosario and GOTUZZO H, Eduardo. Seroprevalencia del virus linfotropo T humano tipo 1 (HTLV-1) en gestantes y grupos de elevada prevalencia para enfermedades de transmisión sexual de Ayacucho, Perú. Rev. perú. med. exp. salud publica [online]. 2004, vol.21, n.4, pp.269-272. ISSN 1726-4634.
We determined HTLV-1 prevalence in pregnant women coming for prenatal control, as well as in high-prevalence groups for sexually transmitted infections at the Ayacucho (an Andean Peruvian city) Regional Hospital using seroepidemiological surveys. Serum samples were screened using an ELISA method and diagnoses were confirmed using an in-line immunoassay. 602 pregnant women were enrolled, 3 of them (0,5%) were diagnosed as positve for HTLV-1 infection, and 3 were found to be indeterminate (0,5%). All 85 female sex workers were negative for HTLV-1 infection, and 2 of 74 (2,7%) homosexual/bisexual men were found to be indeterminate. We conclude that the seroprevalence of HTLV-1 infection in pregnant women in Ayacucho is low. The absence of positive cases in high-prevalence groups for sexually transmitted infections contrasts with what has been reported in our country.
