Peruvian Ministry of Health has implemented the Integrated Healthcare Model focusing in different stages in life, and part of this program is care for the elderly. In order to assess the level of knowledge regarding geriatrics,a survey was performed on the interdisciplinary personnel responsible for this program.73 healthcare professionals were interviewed. 30%acquired their knowledge during pregraduate studies, and 59%of them rated the quality of such knowledge as fair or poor;only 10%pointed out that on the basis of their knowledge and experience they are capable of managing health problems in the elderly. All professionals surveyed indicated that training is necessary, but they preferred theoretical- practical workshops,as well as training periods in geriatric services. The topics they were more interested in were high blood pressure (84%),depression (73%),osteoporosis (66%),and diabetes (56%).We conclude that there is a deficit in knowledge about geriatrics in healthcare personnel responsible of the elderly, because of lack of specialized courses in medical schools and poor professional training.
