Abstract

CALDERON S, Jully  and  ALZAMORA DE LOS GODOS U, Luis. Influence of the family relationships on the induced abortion in teenagers. Rev. perú. med. exp. salud publica [online]. 2006, vol.23, n.4, pp.247-252. ISSN 1726-4634.

Objectives: To determine the influence of family relationships on induced abortion in teenagers. Materials and methods: Case control study. Cases were 58 teenagers with induced abortion who came to the Regional Teaching Hospital in Trujillo because of vaginal hemorrhage, and controls were 58 teenagers paired according to age, gestational age, and socioeconomic status, who continued their pregnancies and attended prenatal care in the same hospital. Results: Only 20% of cases told their parents about being pregnant, compared to 62% of controls (p<0,001); lack of confidence in parents was associated with induced abortion (odds ratio [OR] and 95% confidence interval 4,5 [ 1,7-12,3 ]), and there was no association with family history of abortion or with violence within the family. Negative reactions from parents (violence, taking the girl out of school or making her go to work) were more frequent in teenagers undergoing induced abortion (OR: 14,1 [ 3,9-50,9]); as well as a history of having bad times and rude discussions within the household (OR: 23,9 [ 12,4-208,7). Conclusions: Communication and confidence with parents, as well as negative reactions when learning that a teenager is pregnant, are strongly related with induced abortions in Trujillo.
