Abstract ARCE-PALOMINO, Juan L. Great urban fires: mesa redonda, Lima 2001. Rev. perú. med. exp. salud publica, Jan./mar 2008, vol.25, no.1, p.118-124. ISSN 1726-4634. Among the human-induced disasters highlight the great urban fires. On December 29, 2001, in a crowded commercial area of downtown Lima-Peru, saw a large fire that caused 277 deaths, 247 injuries, millionaire losses and a big pain in the Peruvian people. This situation had been expected, but was not taken the necessary actions to prevent it. This article collects the previous situation, the characteristics of the tragedy, action and organization that was available for control, with emphasizes in interdisciplinary work and an active involvement of the Volunteer Firefighters of Peru.
