Abstract

MALPARTIDA-TELLO, Bertilo. Annals of the department of medicine. Oct 1st 1925 Dr. Gastañeta and Dr. Monge's reactions to Dac's passing and the strong commission's report. Acta méd. peruana [online]. 2015, vol.32, n.1, pp.50-59. ISSN 1728-5917.

After the death of Daniel Alcides Carrion (DAC), his memory was forgotten by most of Peruvian society, partly due to the devastating effects of the war between Peru and Chile on the Peruvian population. Nevertheless, given DAC’s self-experiment on 1885 that ended with his life, the Peruvian society paid homage to his medical martyrdom with the construction of a mausoleum to perpetuate his memory. In the post-war period, in the midst of an economic crisis that led to the collapse of several businesses in Peru, in 1913 an academic commission from Harvard University presented a report criticizing DAC’s legacy. The commission, presided by Dr. Strong, presented DAC as an unethical medical doctor. The report was criticized by prestigious Peruvian medical doctors, such as Dr. Gastañeta, MD, and Dr. Monge, MD. Gastañeta and Monge sponsored a special edition of the Annals of the Department of Medicine of the San Fernando Medical School at National University of Saint Mark. In the special edition, the doctors emphasized DAC’s outstanding contribution to the medical field, rejected the Strong Commission’s report. Accordingly, the doctors praised the findings made by Battistini and Barton, which vindicated DAC. In the present document, the exact account of the events published in 1925. The documents shown are copies of the original document, which has not changed through these years.
