NIETO-GUTIERREZ, Wendy et al. Perceptions from newly qualified physicians on internship in Lima, Peru, 2014. Acta méd. peruana [online]. 2016, vol.33, n.2, pp.105-110. ISSN 1728-5917.

Objective: To describe perceptions from recently qualified physicians from Lima medical schools with respect to their internship (last year in medical school). Methods: An observational, descriptive, and cross-sectional study was performed. Young physicians were interviewed during a course, and data were collected with respect to biosafety, medical insurance, aggressions, teaching, workload, and paperwork. Results: From a population comprising 268 young physicians, 42.5% reported they received protection (biosafety) materials when required; 35.8% reported not having any healthcare insurance; 42.5% declared not having any rest period after night shifts throughout their internship; 63.1% reported suffering verbal aggression at some time during this period; 21.6% reported sexual harassment; and 6.3% declared they suffered physical aggression. Conclusion: According to the young physicians interviewed, very troublesome situations during internship are described, particularly with respect to biosafety materials supply, healthcare insurance, resting periods after night shifts, and violence.
