RODRIGUEZ HIDALGO, Luis Alejandro y CHIMOY TUNOQUE, Carlos. Epidemiological characteristics of pulmonary tuberculosis in the prison for males in Trujillo, Peru. Acta méd. Peru [online]. 2017, vol.34, n.3, pp.182-187. ISSN 1728-5917.
Objectives: To know the real extent and the antituberculous resistance profile in inmates with the disease in the Trujillo prison for males. Materials and Methods: This is a descriptive observational study. The data was taken from the reports of the antituberculosis strategy of the Male prison in Trujillo and from the records of the Reference Laboratory of the Regional Health Direction between January 2012 and December 2015. The variables analyzed were incidence, prevalence, and susceptibility testing to antituberculous drugs. The statistical analysis used simple and crossed rate values; the t-Student test and the z-test were also used, together with the IBM SPSS 23.0 statistical software. Results: Data from 308 male subjects with pulmonary tuberculosis were obtained. Of them, 245 (79.5%) had results from susceptibility to antituberculous drugs testing. The average age of the studied subjects was 29.6 years. Those who were previously treated for TB showed high rates of resistance to isoniazid, streptomycin, and rifampin, and those who were never treated showed elevated rates of resistance to isoniazid and streptomycin. The prevalence of multidrug resistant tuberculosis was between 3.8% and 8.9%. Conclusions: Isoniazid resistance was high in patients with and with no history of prior antituberculous therapy; and multidrug-resistant tuberculosis is an epidemiological problem, but less intense than isoniazid resistance
