Abstract

NIZAMA-VALLADOLID, Martín. Demythologization of marijuana’s medicinal use: medical, scientific and social arguments against its legislation. Acta méd. Peru [online]. 2017, vol.34, n.3, pp.231-236. ISSN 1728-5917.

The use of marijuana is a controversial issue even more with the intense global campaing to legalize it, arguing its medicinal benefits; hiding their effects. The present work explains how this drug affects the structure and functioning of the nervous system. Neurotransmitters involved in the addictive process as dopamine, involving pleasure receptors, cannabinoid receptors CB1 and CB2 more widely distributed in the central nervous system and peripheral respectively, which are also associated with changes in motivation and cognitive abilities. There is a variety of information that reinforces the association between marijuana use and the onset or relapse of psychiatric disorders. The American Psychiatry Association (APA) considers that marijuana is not beneficial for the treatment of psychiatric disorders, and warns that its use affects neurodevelopment
