Resumen

LOZANO, Ysabel; PALACIOS, Enver V  y  LOZA, Astrid R. Malnutrition linked to overeating and Parkinson’s disease in a Peruvian hospital during 2007-2017. Acta méd. Peru [online]. 2019, vol.36, n.2, pp.104-109. ISSN 1728-5917.

Objective: To determine the association between malnutrition linked to excessive eating and Parkinson's disease in patients from a Peruvian Hospital during the 2007-2017 period. Materials and Methods: This is a case-control study in which a secondary analysis of the database of "Parkinson's disease and Diabetes Mellitus. Maria Auxiliadora Hospital 2007-2017, a case control study", was performed. Cases were defined as patients older than 40 years with a recent diagnosis of Parkinson's disease made by a neurologist. Controls were those patients who presented to the hospital for any acute condition, with no history of a diagnosis of Parkinson’s disease. Descriptive, bivariate and simple and multiple logistic regression analyses were performed aiming to calculate crude and adjusted odds ratios (ORs). Results: Two-hundred and thirty patients were assessed (115 cases and 115 controls). Cases were mostly males (56.9% vs. 43.1%), elderly (70 years vs. 63 years) and they had higher rates of malnutrition linked to excessive eating (64.35% vs. 49.57%) when compared with controls (p<0.05). Patients with malnutrition linked to excessive eating (OR= 1.84, 95% CI: 1.08-3.12), elderly age (OR= 1.04, 95% CI: 1.02-1.07), male sex (OR= 1.75, 95% CI: 1.04-2.95), and Diabetes Mellitus (OR= 2.07, 95% CI: 1.00-4.30) had a greater likelihood for presenting with Parkinson’s disease. This association was maintained after adjusting for sex, age, diabetes mellitus, alcohol consumption, coffee and tobacco use (aOR = 2.11, 95% CI: 1.15-3.86). Conclusions: Malnutrition linked to excessive eating is a risk factor for Parkinson's disease.
