CHUQUIPOMA-QUISPE, Lizeth I; LAMA-VALDIVIA, Jaime E  y  DE LA CRUZ-VARGAS, Jhony A. Factors associated with Frailty Syndrome in Elderly Subjects Presenting to the Geriatrics Outpatient Clinic in Hipólito Unanue National Hospital, Lima, Peru. Acta méd. Peru [online]. 2019, vol.36, n.4, pp.67-273. ISSN 1728-5917.

Objective: To determine associated factors to the frailty syndrome (FS) in elderly subjects presenting to the Geriatrics Outpatient Clinic in Hipolito Unanue National Hospital in Lima, Peru, during February 2019. Materials and Methods: This is an observational cross-sectional analytical study. The FRAIL questionnaire was used for diagnosing FS. Both clinical and demographic data were collected, and functional, cognitive, affective, nutritional, and social aspects were assessed in all patients included in the study using the components of the Integrative Geriatric Assessment. Frequency, association, and statistical significance figures were obtained, for comparing the dependent variable (FS) and all independent variables. OR values with 95% CIs were calculated, and p<0.05 was deemed as statistically significant. Results: Out of 180 patients studied, 34 (18.9%) were frail, 100 (55.6%) were pre-frail, and 46 (25.5%) were strong. The multivariate analysis identified factors associated with FS, such as age >80 years (OR= 11.65, 95% CI: 3.64-37.24, p<0.001), cognitive impairment (OR= 9.23; 95% CI: 2.48-34.27, p= 0.001), depression (OR= 3.37; 95% IC: 1.22-9.29, p= 0.010), and malnutrition (OR= 2.97; 95% CI: 1.05-6.55, p= 0.023). Conclusions: FS is a frequent condition in the Geriatrics Outpatient Clinic, and in this study, this condition was associated with age greater than 80 years, cognitive impairment, depression, and malnutrition. A significant group of patients were deemed as prefrail.
