Abstract

ARDITO DIRECTOR MEDICO, Rocío  and  CASTRO, Raquel. War wounds in nineteenth century Peru: the eye injury of Andrés Avelino Cáceres. Acta méd. Peru [online]. 2023, vol.40, n.4, pp.343-349.  Epub Dec 31, 2023. ISSN 1728-5917.  http://dx.doi.org/10.35663/amp.2023.404.2774.

Andrés Avelino Cáceres (1836-1923) was a prominent Peruvian politician and military man who held the presidency for two terms and led the Peruvian army during the Pacific War, for which he is considered a national hero. At the beginning of his military career, during the siege of the city of Arequipa in 1856, he suffered an eye injury whose scar can be seen in the photographs that were taken of him later throughout his life, which led to him being nicknamed “El Tuerto”. We will describe the circumstances in which the ophthalmic injury of Andrés Avelino Cáceres occurred, the consequences that this ophthalmic trauma could have had and the treatment he could have received, based on the hero’s own story and the images of him that are preserved.
