The purpose of this descriptive type of investigation was to describe the factors associated with alcohol consumption in college students of Bucaramanga and its metropolitan area (Colombia). This study is found in one line of investigation about alcohol consumption in young people led by the Psychology Faculty of the Pontificia Universidad Javeriana, Bogotá (Colombia). This line pretends to provide with answers to this problematic of public health and hopes, in medium terms, to propose prevention activities taking into consideration the specific conditions that every group of young individuals have. This study specifies the conditions and factors associated with alcohol consumption of the population studied; college students of Bucaramanga, in terms of the personal situations and situations that involve others. Two instruments were used for this investigation: the "Systematic Interview of Alcohol Consumption - ISCA" and a Card of General Information. This study counted with the participation of 198 students from four different universities that belong to the "Red Emprender del Oriente Colombiano". The result shows that 93.9% of college students of Bucaramanga consume alcohol and that the behavior begins, on average, when the individual hits the age of 14.7 years. The frequency of the consumption is given as follows: 42.4% is monthly and in most of the cases it occurs in clubs and in houses. The drink that is most consumed is beer (up to 6 bottles) and it is considered a risk of moderated consume in 83.8% of the population studied. The factors associated with alcohol consumption are the emotional state, pleasant moments and social pressure.
