Objective: To establish the prevalence of tobacco use in school children of the Municipality of Ebejico, Department of Antioquia. Methods: Descriptive-transversal study that used the Global Youth Tobacco Survey (GYTS) in which frequencies and statistically significant differences were analyzed in a sample of 314 high school students from the rural and urban Municipality of Ebejico. Results: 22.6% of the survey respondents has already smoked; 6.7% did so between 10-11 years; current consumption was 10.8%; 7% bought cigarettes at stores and the 9.2% bought them by units; 9.2% had no impediments to buy despite their ages; the 20.1% of their fathers and the 33.4% of their uncles smoke; 22.6% saw the teachers smoking at the school; 13.1% will smoke if a friend ask them to; 39.2% have a friend who smokes; 17.2% saw others smoking in their homes; and 10.2% received free cigarettes from vendors. Discussion: Social factors such as school, peers, and family environment, were elements of identification so that young people from early age decided to smoke or not to smoke.
