Abstract
QUISPE, Cristina; ASTUDILLO, Luis; VILLASENOR, Jorge and DELGADILLO, Álvaro. Deagradation of pharmaceuticals compounds in water by ozonation. Rev. Soc. Quím. Perú [online]. 2008, vol.74, n.4, pp.260-268. ISSN 1810-634X.
The degradation of two â-blockers, atenolol and nadolol (50 ppm), was conducted using ozonation. At the working conditions, pH 3, 7 and 9, a degradation of 90% for nadolol and about 60% for atenolol was achieved after one hour of reaction. The main degradation products were identified as low molecular weight organic acids. The relative toxicity of the solutions was evaluated using the Daphnia magna test. It was found that the toxicity of the treated solutions, under all the working conditions, was lower than the toxicity of the initial solution. The biggest decrease in toxicity was obtained at pH = 9.
