Abstract

DELGADILLO GAMBOA, Gloria  and  SUN KOU, María del Rosario. Adsorption of fenol with activated carbon preparated from common medlar stones, by chemical activation. Rev. Soc. Quím. Perú [online]. 2009, vol.75, n.1, pp.64-75. ISSN 1810-634X.

In this work, activated carbons (ACs) were prepared from common medIar stones (Mespilus communi), by chemical activation with H3PO4 and KOH. The influence of the chemical impregnation ratio (activant agente/precursor, w/w) and the temperature of activation on the adsorption capacity of fenol, was evaluated. Measuring the adsorption of N2 at -196°C, were determinated that the ACs obtained, have high surface area: the activated with H3PO4 have microporous structure , and those activated with KOH have micro and light mesoporosity, confirmed with micrography obtained by SEM. The ACs with KOH showed the highest capacity adsorption of phenol than those tratated with H3PO4; it is relationed with presence of basic groups. For 100 ppm solution of phenol, the ACs activated with KOH (NK1-700) and H3PO4 (NFO,67-500), uptake 93,3 and 61,6%, respectively against a 7,6% achieved with comercial carbon M-2184 (Merck); while of 500 ppm solution, ACs with KOH (NKI-700) and H3PO4 (NFO,94-500) uptake up to 163,7 and 102,3 mg ofphenol/g ofAC , respectively.
