In higher education there is a consensus about the formation ofthe new professionals should involve the use of methodological strategies that give priority to developing thinking skills that help students to develop their maximum intellectual po ten ti al. The Problem-based Leaming (PBL) methodology is a proposal that closely approximates to this new vision of higher education. A hybrid PBL model was implemented in unity "Electronic Configuration and Periodic Table" of Chemistry 1, first year course in the Science and Engineering curriculum ofthe Pontifical Catholic University ofPeru. Comparing the scores obtained for students in an experimental group and a control group in a test for assessing the unit, using independent samples t test, allowed us to identify statistically significant differences in favour of the first group. The linear regression analyses, taking as the dependent variable the test scores of students in the experimental group and as independent variable average scores obtained in the activities and the PBL problem, allowed us to identify and quantify the predictive ability ofthe latter with respect to achieved leaming.
