Resumen

CUIZANO, Norma A.; LLANOS, Bertha P.  y  NAVARRO, Abel E.. Elimination of 2-chlorophenol from aqueous solutions by marine algae: evidences of the mechanism of adsorption. Rev. Soc. Quím. Perú [online]. 2009, vol.75, n.2, pp.213-220. ISSN 1810-634X.

The mechanism ofthe removal of2-chlorophenol onto the marine algae Lessonia nigrescens Bory and Macrocystis integrifolia Bory from aqueous solutions was investigated in batch experiments. The effect of the presence of metallic ions in the adsorptive process was evaluated. The results show that lead slightly increases the adsorption of2-chlorophenol. This suggests two different types of adsorption ofboth types of pollutants by the two marine algae and a possible synergic effect. Scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive X-ray analyses predominantly indicated a surface adsorption. Finally, the change in Gibbs free energy (ΔG0) of the process was determined. The results show that the adsorption is not spontaneous for none of the algae. This also corroborates the absence of electrostatic interactions and the existence of apolar interactions in an unfavourable environment surrounded by hydroxyl groups.
