Abstract

MUNOZ JAUREGUI, Ana María et al. Evaluation of compounds with biological activity in peels of camu-camu (Myrciaria dubia), guinda (Prunus serotina), carambola (Averrhoa carambola L) and tomate de arbol (Physalis peruviana) cultivated in Peru. Rev. Soc. Quím. Perú [online]. 2009, vol.75, n.4, pp.431-438. ISSN 1810-634X.

The objective of the present study was to evaluate the extracts of the peel of carambola, tomato tree, guinda, and camu camu for their content of compounds with biological activity, to determine the total polyphenols content, antioxidant activity using the 1,1-difenil-2-picrilhidrasil (DPPH) radical, and free radical scavenging capacity using the ABTS/ABAP system. The samples reported significant statistical difference (p <0,05) for their total polyphenols content and antioxidant activity (IC50 values) according to the standardized Tukey's test. The studied samples appear to be a good source of antioxidants, especially phenolic compounds, whose use might be appropriate in the formulation of functional foods.

Keywords : antioxidant; polyphenols; camu-camu; guinda; carambola; tomato tree.
